Anyone who has ever been to Dubai will know that it is a city with lots of different layers to its character, from the old part of the city where traditional architecture reigns, to the newer part of the city where innovation and unusual designs are the order of the day. Dubai is a city where there has been a great deal of investment in recent years and it has become a hot-spot for those who want to be part of the race to create the biggest and most innovative structures.
Dubai’s new city
The newer part of Dubai is all about modern architecture with plenty of steel and glass. These days there are plenty of high-rise structures in the city and as the city competes with other major cities around the world, it seems that no building can ever be too high. Business and tourism have become the focus of new developments. Rumour has it that around a quarter of the world’s construction cranes have found a home in Dubai and the plans for development are showing no signs of slowing down.
One of the most obvious examples of recent development is the Burj Dubai or Burj Khalifa, which is said to be the tallest structure in the world. Visitors can go to the observation deck on the 124th floor to enjoy the spectacular views of the city. The city is also now home to a range of unique hotels and resorts as part of its modern developments, and those who are interested can find out more from online resources such as Sid Vaikunta’s blog.
Mr Vaikunta has spent years in the hospitality and entertainment industry, specialising in marketing and strategy. Implementing a number of measures to improve productivity and reduce expenditure, his knowledge, experience and qualifications have taken him around the world to work for some of the top names in the industry.
The old city
The older part of Dubai can be found in the districts known as Bur Dubai. Visitors can find a number of great historical buildings just off the Al Shindagha Road, including the Shindagha Watchtower, from where the citizens of the city were alerted about possible invasion and pirates.
Another popular attraction is the Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum House. This traditional courtyard house dates back to the end of the 19th century and used to be the home of the rulers of Dubai. It is next door to the Sheikh Juma Al Maktoum house, which is considered to be a particularly good example of the traditional architectural style of the city. Not to be missed are the wind-tower houses of Bastakia, an area that was very nearly bulldozed.
The two areas of the city have a very different feel to them. The old part of the town has a traditional air to it and is probably much more indicative of the Middle Eastern town that visitors will expect, while the new town is very commercial. People are flocking to Dubai, particularly celebrities and businesses, because it has plenty to offer. Here visitors can enjoy the great weather, tax breaks and the luxury accommodation without some of the cultural restrictions that are in place in other areas of the Middle East.
The different facets of this city mean that it really does have something for everyone, regardless of whether or not they want to live and work here or just visit.
